ROOM TO HEAL

Kerline was just 19 years old, when she was rushed to our emergency room. She has Type 1 diabetes, a condition that requires daily insulin. But for three months, she had gone without it. Not by choice, but because her family couldn’t afford it.

When she collapsed a kind neighbor who knew Bethesda brought her to us just in time. She arrived unconscious, her body overwhelmed by dangerously high blood sugar. Our emergency team responded immediately—with IV fluids, insulin, and most importantly, prayer.

And then—a miracle happened.

That same day, she woke up.

With continued care, guidance, and education, she is now recovering well, learning how to manage her condition, and has received support to get her insulin regularly.

Her life was saved—just in time.

Supporting

Bethesda’s emergency department cares for more than 3,500 patients each year, and that number continues to grow. Recently, we’ve seen a sharp increase in patients seeking urgent care—so much so that we’ve sometimes had to place two family members in a single bed for

treatment. This increase in demand is driven by two key factors. First, thanks to our solar power system, Bethesda is one of the few clinics in the region with 24-hour electricity, making it a reliable option for emergency care. Second, the population of Cap-Haïtien is rapidly increasing as thousands of refugees flee gang violence in Port-au-Prince and settle in the north. More people means a greater need for medical care—and that need is growing every day.

This summer, we’re raising funds to transform two unused rooms in the dental clinic into additional space for emergency observation beds. These rooms will need repairs, full renovation, and proper furnishing. Right now, we have 15 observation beds, but with your support, we hope to add 16 more—doubling our current capacity.

Double Impact

This June, every dollar you donate will go twice as far! Thanks to generous donors, all contributions up to $40,000 will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling your impact on the lives of those we serve. Please help expand Bethesda’s emergency department. Gifts can be made through our website or by sending a check.
